About the solution
Impact Goal: Catalyse private capital for green housing to empower women and cut construction emissions Description: Reall, a social enterprise, has developed the Green Affordable Housing Finance (GAHF) as a financial solution to catalyse local, self-sustaining housing finance ecosystems. This initiative is designed to provide accessible and robust routes to green and affordable homeownership, particularly for women in rapidly urbanising emerging markets. GAHF addresses the dual challenges of the global housing crisis, which requires 300 million new homes by 2030, and the urgent need for climate-smart solutions in the building sector, which is responsible for 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
GAHF plans to catalyse private finance for the supply and offtake of affordable green homes by addressing market blockages, using innovative financial instruments like guarantees to local financial institutions (LFIs), alternative credit assessments, and green certification. The initiative will also deploy concessional finance to developers for green construction. By promoting gender equity in housing provision and leveraging climate-smart construction practices, GAHF aims to advance female economic empowerment and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector.
