About the solution

Impact Goal: Boost incomes and resilience of women farmers by scaling sustainable seaweed value chains Description: Action for Ocean (previously Aqua Farms Organization), in partnership with Sayari Ventures, proposes the Africa Fair Seaweed Finance Facility, aimed at empowering women-led seaweed farmer groups in Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. This initiative focuses on the adoption of deep-sea seaweed farming technology, which is less susceptible to climate change, offers higher yields, and has more ecological benefits. By facilitating access to finance, innovative cultivation management, processing knowledge, and market access, the facility aims to improve the livelihoods of women seaweed farmers through sustainable industry scaling.

The Africa Fair Seaweed Finance Facility intends to provide catalytic finance to women-led groups for adopting climate-resilient seaweed farming technologies. Through long-term purchase orders with high-margin buyers, the facility guarantees minimum income and bonus payments to the farmers, enhancing their yields, income, and resilience to climate change. Collaborative partnerships, innovative farming practices, and in-country development of high-value seaweed products aim to revolutionise the seaweed industry in the region.
