About the solution
Impact Goal: Transform fisheries through sustainable practices to protect ecosystems, stabilise yields, and support communities Description: Environmental Finance Limited, trading as Finance Earth, in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), seeks to scale up the Fisheries Improvement Fund (FIF). This initiative is designed to accelerate the implementation of Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) globally, overcoming significant funding barriers and contributing to the sustainable management of marine resources as outlined in SDG 14, particularly target 14.4. By mobilising repayable blended capital, the FIF aims to offer a sustainable funding model that supports the transformation of fisheries towards sustainable practices, benefiting marine ecosystems, fishing communities, and the broader blue economy.
The FIF introduces a unique and scalable funding model for FIPs by providing upfront concessionary finance to launch, restart, or stabilise FIPs. This is complemented by an innovative repayment mechanism through volume-based fee agreements with supply chain actors, ensuring equitable contributions and incentivising early engagement. This model is expected to not only stabilise fishery yields and reduce supply chain volatility but also improve livelihoods within local fishing communities through sustainable practices.
