Colibri Catalyst

Impact Goal: Building demand for and supply of natural climate solutions as an investment class Description: To achieve the SDG 13 and SDG 15 targets, we need to triple investments in natural climate solutions1 by 2030 and quadruple them by 2050. These investments can simultaneously make significant contributions to SDG and SDG 5. However, investing in natural climate solutions and sustainable and inclusive economic growth is considered high risk. Catalytic capital can reduce investment risk and help pilot and scale new business models. Yet this type of capital is scarce in the land-use sector, and where it is available, it is costly and time consuming to secure. Colibri Catalyst is a new catalytic capital facility designed to address this gap.

Colibri is a women-led facility aspiring to raise a USD 200M close-ended fund comprised entirely of concessional capital – grants, concessional debt, and equity – from public and philanthropic funders. Colibri will deploy catalytic capital (including debt and equity) to intermediary investment vehicles targeting ODA-eligible countries. The concessional nature of Colibri’s capital will allow intermediary funds to achieve near-market financial returns for themselves and their investors. The end beneficiaries will include smallholder farmers and landowners, including women; small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); and local and indigenous communities – all located in ODA-eligible countries.
