In Hamburg, the SDG Impact Finance Initiative (SIFI), together with the UBS Optimus Foundation, co-hosted a high-level luncheon dialogue on the role of catalytic capital in shaping the future of philanthropy.
The event brought together around 30 to 40 representatives from leading German foundations across climate, environment, education, nutrition, and health to explore how philanthropic capital can be deployed more strategically and with greater leverage for sustainable development.
The discussion highlighted a growing recognition that while substantial capital exists within the philanthropic sector, much of it remains underutilised. With European foundations holding an estimated EUR 516 billion in assets, participants reflected on the opportunity to move beyond traditional grantmaking towards more catalytic approaches that can mobilise private investment at scale.
Key themes included the role of innovative financial instruments such as guarantees, subordinated capital, and outcomes-based financing, as well as the importance of platforms that can align public, philanthropic, and private actors. The exchange also underscored the value of data and analytical infrastructure, with SIFI’s Ecosystem Window and the PRISM Impact Lab presented as key enablers of more informed and scalable investment decisions.
Key insights from the Hamburg dialogue have been captured in a short Event Summary, available below.
